About me

I am the mother of two boys and I recently just moved to Mercer Island from Los Angeles! What a change of weather- especially for gardening. There are so many amazing new gardening possibilities here. I am renting a house right now and really need to start from scratch, but I don't want to spend too much money to make my garden not look awful as it does now. I am used to native plants of California and Succulents being the main body of plant for my gardening, but now I will have to expand my gardening horizons!

Current project

Renovating my garden for a rental home. Need ideas for how to do it without breaking the bank! Want some color, but because of the rain here, something that will hold up in partial shade with lots of water.

Type of gardener

Obsessed with Veggies!

Favorite garden activity

Weeding- call me crazy

Hi my online friend. Fig, I am having serious issues with posting things on the site. I have tried multiple of times to post on the site and the site goes haywire. I just tried to answer a posting and again the site went wanky. Is anyone working on this? Just wondering I like what your doing here and want to see your site grow. <br/> <br/> <br/>later <br/>happy growing <br/>Brandon

Hi figtree! I moved to Seattle from San Diego about 15 years ago, so I know exactly what you mean. I have come to love it here because it&#x27;s so easy to grow things here (except tomatoes, bell peppers, and morning glories, darn it). It&#x27;s a learning experience, for sure.

Hiya! Like the rest, I want to thank you, too, for writing on my garden wall. Like Fernando, I&#x27;m still not clear on how to contact others in the garden but, like everything else, I&#x27;m learning. Thanks so much for your offer of help--rest assured, I need it:) Now, I have to figure out if my perennials are going to make it through the IN winters. Like you, I&#x27;m from the west coast and, even after 10y am still trying to get acclimated to a new locale. What I wouldn&#x27;t give to be back in the bay area. I&#x27;m sure I&#x27;ll be writing more on YOUR garden wall soon. Thank you again

Hey Leigh! Thanks for finding me, just make sure to make the people you really want to keep in contact with your "friend" and all of your friends will show up on your logged in homepage. Think of this site as a way to share and learn information. If there is a post, or a plant page you can comment to give your gardening advice, or you can ask a question and people will respond with their answers. We hope you find a lot of stuff to look through and have a blast at Dig The Dirt and in your garden!!

Hi, FigTree!!!! I was confused--I bookmarked the login page for your website but when I tried to log in, Internet said it had expired and, bummer--I thought the webpage had shut down!!!!! I'm SO glad to see everyone is still here! Thank Goodness!!! Now...I think I've sorta figured out how to write to any of my friends--all one of you:) But when I click on the "Quick Clinks" banner on the R side of the page, whatever drops down is covered by the banner advertising right below it--and I have no clue how to fix this (or the fungus my calla lilies have, either). Whatever suggestion you have or help you'd care to offer would be MOST appreciated--with the webpage, or my lilies:) Thank you, FigTree! BOY am I glad you're still here!!!!!

Are you still working on the renovation for the rental home? We have five rentals in Lewis, County, WA and my husband and I are both avid gardeners. We moved here almost six years ago from Fresno, CA. and do understand the drastic learning curve when moving to a totally new climate. Let me know if you still need suggestions for planting at a rental property. Also, if you go to yardshare.com and type in Fastforward in the SEARCH box, you can take a look at my landscaping progress at home.

Hey Kaarina! <br/>Wondering if you can help me with something maybe a bit out of the ordinary- I&#x27;m trying to figure out how I can grow a lemon tree in Trinidad. It&#x27;s lime overload here but no lemons and I need my lemons for my iced tea. I cannot really bring a lemon into the country (yes, I fear immigration). I think if I take the seeds from a lemon they will be too dry by the time I get them back to Trinidad. I cannot find any nursery that will sell seeds. I just joined digthedirt hoping I might be able to figure this out! <br/>Hope everyone is well! <br/>xo <br/>mere

You lucky girl! I miss Washington so much. We lived at Fort Lewis for three years (husband was military). My favorite place was Gig Harbor! I have friends still who live in Purdy. I miss the weather like you wouldn&#x27;t believe! We are currently in AZ. My husband was sent here after he got out of the Army (this is our home of record). I cried the day we got on the plane to leave WA! I loved it so much. We have discussed moving there or to Maine. Right now the location we chose is Maine. If we move there and for some reason don&#x27;t like it, after I finish my college (must attend in Maine and Boston, Mass.) then I am certain we will find ourselves back in WA! I miss rain!!! <br/>I am planting succulents here too, although I miss fuchsias, tulips, daffodils, gladiolus and hollyhocks and ferns!!! Enjoy your new home! Have you made it to the Tacoma zoo? they have a garden of flowers (its a huge walk through thing with a canopy of flowers, and some of the largest flowers I have ever seen in my life. You should go! That is free, and the aquarium at the zoo is worth the trip! I am jealous! There are a lot of great co-ops up there too, check those out for sure! <br/> <br/>I am renting as well. I know what you mean about wanting to do things but having to keep it to a minimum of cost since its a rental and you don&#x27;t necessarily know how long you will be there to enjoy it. <br/> <br/>Its nice to &quot;meet&quot; you! <br/>Jen

Sprite
flush puppy commented on 03/01/10
great feedback! thank you... we have talked about forums on the site, but decided to use "groups" instead- we felt like it would be easier to share information and have posts, q & a, members, galleries all in one place. What do you like better about the forums on other sites? Really appreciate you bringing it up.
Sprite
FigTree replied: on 03/01/10
It's interesting to read about other people's issues and solutions and projects/progress, especially if it's something I hadn't considered. ;) I haven't really explored the Groups things much.
Sprite
flush puppy replied: on 03/01/10
Hey, I started a new group - check it out - NSGA. You're kinda North Seattle, in relation to say, Mexico. :)
Sprite
flush puppy replied: on 03/01/10
a good way to start a "forum" is to make a contribution/post and tag it to related categories (vegetable gardening, sustainable living etc.), and to whatever group your contribution may be related to. We found that in traditional forums ideas get lost and that they are hard to search through, so this site is trying to redesign the way people share their information. Whenever you create a "contribution", a "post", or ask a question you are basically starting a conversation with other members. I hope this helps and PLEASE keep the feedback coming- you don't know how much it helps! Yes, I am joining your group for sure!!! YAY...
Sprite
FigTree replied: on 03/01/10
Excellent. One question about Groups - are members notified of new posts?
Sprite
flush puppy replied: on 03/01/10
again- excellent question and the answer is no, but am trying to get that into development ASAP. Members are notified when you post a comment to the wall, so if you would like to notify members of a post you have written, for now you can write "hey dude, check out my new post!" and then they will know to go to the group page--- I know it is tedious right now, but we are redesigning a lot of stuff, seeing what works, what doesn't, so please bear with us! I am sending this on to chief cultivator and letting him know this would be helpful for groups.. thank you!!!

Hey FGG- we are trying to work out kinks in our GWA group, but will eventually invite everyone that was there- wouldn't that be fun? Just added your blog to our links page- take a look and let me know if it represents you well :)

I would imagine in time that this site will have enough database to answer your question about what to grow---but for now---you can visit the Proven Winners site and plug in your info and sun requirements. You can do raised beds less expensively if your dirt needs a lot of amending. You can even cut the bottom out of a big trash can and grow so much stuff in it that you won&#x27;t see the can----or.....spray paint the can with that new sandstone paint on the market right now. Or......fly me out there and I&#x27;ll do it for you :)

I knew if I got you here you wo7uld have amazing ideas :) We are doing raised beds for veggies and signing up with a company that delivers a flat of seedlings to your door- right vegetables for the right time of year. Isn't that rockin? What is sandstone paint?

Aww, thank you. I do like it here. Afraid I'm missing out on some good topics but I hear that's being worked on. Sandstone paint is paint with sand in it to give it texture. ---Can't believe you are getting a flat of veges. So awesome. Look at this site for companion planting which will help with pest and disease. I'm not plugging this site but it's got good info. http://www.ghorganics.com/page2.html Cathy @ Outdoors In has some excellent information on fertilizing stuff. I just love her. http://outdoorsin.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/fertilizers-part-2/ Ok, go read and report back ;)

Hey Fig! I see that you moved from Hollywood! Are you still acting? I love the Seattle area climate for gardening... you guys are lucky. I am sure your nieces and nephews are happy having first cousins close...We were rather lucky this weekend to get 5&quot; of rain after a two-year drought. The desert bloomed yesterday here in Austin! Happy fall gardening, <br/> Barry &#x27;Appleseed&#x27; Landry
