About me

I am a mother, writer, vegetable gardener and chicken-keeper in Portland, Oregon. I've been growing my own vegetables since 2004, starting with a little raised bed for tomatoes and expanding to my current 860 sq foot garden. My enjoyment of this hobby has vastly increased since my toddler is now my constant companion in the garden. After 30 years of having a wholesale nursery, my husband and I retired. I went back to work at my grandparents nursery but hubby retired for real and started a very large veg. garden I think to feed the whole world. Plus now we have over 30 Nankin Bantams. He loves giving them to 4-H kids and then seeing their awards. They are so cute and now we have fresh eggs (very tiny) and baby chicks. And the chicken coops are built better then our house. Just Kidding but good grief.

They do take care of weeds, but unfortunately, the can't discriminate between weeds and veggies, so once I start planting, I'll have to keep the chickens out of the garden until everything is established.

Do the chickens really handle your weeds? How cool! I'd be afraid they'd pick everything else clean... how do you manage that? Glad to have you in the DigtheDirt community :-)

Welcome to Dig The Dirt... we are super happy you made it here. We don't want to brag, but we've got a lot to offer here!

Start a Gardening Journal/ Blog: just click on the tab "contributions" above and start writing and uploading photos. This is where you can really get the word out about how you are involved with gardening as your post lives on the homepage for all to see!

Become a Featured Member: Every week we choose one member who has been active on our site and highlight them.

If starting a blog is too intimidating you can read articles and ask questions: We have tons of info all over this site and there is so much more to come, so keep browsing. Ask any question you have and other members will answer, and if they don't I will find out the answer for you!

Make some friends: Don't be shy- so far everyone is really kind and generous here. Just click on the green tab "gardeners" above and you can search by zone or city to make buddies in your area.
