description for "Winter Squash and Pumpkins: Cucurbita maxima 'Iran'"
A collection of shapes and colors describe 'Iran' winter squash. Not a lot of information is known on the origins of this variety. It is believed to be a 'landrace' variety. Meaning that villagers from various parts of the country grew it and used it for their own purposes and likely planted it with other varieties. Generally speaking, the rinds are a marbling of orange and green and the flesh is a deep orange color. At full maturity, frutis can weigh between five and 15 pounds. It is both heat and drought tolerant and has likely been grown in Iran for many decades and is very rare in the US market. Maturity in 85-110 days. Edited by S. Derr
