description for "Beets: Beta Vulgaris 'Mammoth Red Mangel'"

Centuries have passed but this beet has maintained its popularity. Dating back to the 1400's, this selection is hardy, adaptable and palatable to both humans and livestock. This late Summer beet is harvested in cooler temperatures in Winter or early Spring. Its roots are deep red with green stems. Weighing up to 20 pounds each, they can be left in the ground and harvested as needed. Prized for its high sugar content, this beet can be used in wines and homemade beers or diced and consumed like potatoes. If all else fails, sheep, cattle, swine and chickens will enjoy it. Maturity in 100 days. Edited by S. Derr
