Carolina Allspice is a deciduous shrub. In more sun, the shrub looks rounded and more full. In less sun, the shrub is more loose and open. Chocolate flowers on the shrub appear May through July and give off spicy aroma that intensifies in the evening. Tan balloon shaped fruit (capsule) ripens in October and stays on the bush into the winter. Prune the bush after it flowers. Shrub can be used as a specimen or a border plant and for it's fragrant flowers.
