description for "Lettuce: Lactuca sativa 'Garden Ferns'"

This tasty and unusual heirloom looseleaf lettuce is a treasure recently discovered at a small Italian seed producer. The dense rosettes of 'Garden Ferns' with indented, ruffled edged leaves will remind you of lacy ferns. The long graceful leaves of 'Garden Ferns' have a delicate, sweet and juicy texture that should be enjoyed soon after cutting. At harvest, the large framed plants are heavy for their size with truly delectable, tender leaves that make big luscious salads needing only the simplest of dressings. Savor young thinnings in your first spring salads. Then harvest plants by cutting mature heads when they feel firm and well-filled out. Be sure to thin properly and keep evenly moist for sweet tasting, full heads. Pull and discard or compost overmature plants if they begin to elongate ("bolt") in hot weather as they are bitter at this stage. - edited by dtd pbcouchman
