description for "Turnip: Brassica rapa, 'Purple Top White Globe'"

Brassica rapa 'Purple Top White Globe' was introduced before 1890. The smooth, round root is bright purple above ground and white below. Extremely tender when young. Tops are great steamed or in salads. 'Purple Top White Globe' stores well. Sow seed thinly in the earliest spring in rows 12 inches apart. Sow in late summer for a fall crop. Be sure to thin plants when they have their first true leaves. Harvesting tips. Harvest when roots are 2-3 inches across for best eating quality in the spring. Can be harvested at a larger size in the fall. Greens can be harvested with the roots. Planting depth: .5 inch. Days to germination: 3-6 days. 45-60 days to maturity.
