description for "Beets: Beta vulgaris, 'Lutz Salad Leaf'"

Beta vulgaris 'Lutz Salad Leaf' produces lush, chard-like 14-18 in. greens of excellent eating quality and big, flavorful red beets. Roots remain tender and sweet even when large. 'Lutz Salad Leaf' beet is perhaps the best storage beet. Sow 1 seed per inch directly in soil in rows 12-18 inches apart. For fall harvest, sow in mid-summer. Enrich soil lightly with aged compost. Maintain a soil pH of 6.0 or above with the addition of lime. Can be pulled at any stage from 1 inch to full maturity. Planting depth: .5-.75 inch. Days to germination: 5-10 days. 60-80 days to maturity.
