description for "Tropicals: Mandevilla Splendens"

The Mandevilla is a tender woody vine that provides nonstop, huge, pink, trumpet-shaped blooms framed by attractive evergreen foliage. The flowers have bright pink petals with white and gold throats and are up to 4" across! The Mandevilla blooms heaviest in the summer time and sporadically throughout the rest of the year. The vine twines around any kind of support and can reach to 10' heights. Another variety, Mandevilla x amoena 'Alice du Pont' is similar but has smaller flowers and grows to heights of 20'! Mandevilla is moderately salt tolerant and requires sun for best flowering (will take part shade, especially in the heat of the day in hot climates). This plant also does well in containers, and should be wintered indoors if there's any threat of a freeze.

History:

Native to SE Brazil.
