Sweeter than sugar? Stevia is used as a substitute for table sugar and is purported to be up to 300 times sweeter than sugar. Its leaves are widely used as a sweetening herb in foods and folk medicines. Outside of the US it has been used for recognized as a sweetner. In the US, the FDA only recognized as a dietary supplement, not a sweetner. Can be grown in the garden ornamentally. It does have tapered light green leaves and a white flower. Hardy in Zones 9-11. Used mainly outside those zones as an annual.
