description for "Basil: Ocimum 'African Blue'"

'African Blue' basil is the gem of the basil family. Both an ornamental and culinary variety, 'African Blue' basil grows into a small shrub. In cooler weather the leaves are attractively splashed with purple variegation. The pale pink flowers are non-stop, from early spring through late fall. The whole plant has a wonderful smoky basil scent! Basil is one of those herbs you always wish you planted more of. When summer temperatures heat up these highly fragrant plants seem to grow inches overnight. African Blue basil produces medium-sized, dark green leaves that work well in salads or sauces. An added attribute of this cultivar is that it is the easiest to overwinter indoors. Gardeners in northern zones should keep the tender perennials and desirable annual herbs indoors during the cold months. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman
