description for "Garlic and Shallots: Allium sativum 'German Red'"

'German Red' garlic is a hardneck variety. This type of garlic produces a woody flower stalk with bulblets atop as well as large cloves underground. The cloves are bigger and easier to peel than the ones produced by softnecks. 'German Red' produces large bulbs with 8-12 cloves per bulb. It is especially favored for its fine flavor and ease of peeling. It keeps moderately well when properly cured and stored. Although it can be grown in mild climate, optimum vigor, flavor and quality occur when grown where winters are cold. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman

History:

Allium sativum has been cultivated throughout such a large portion of human history, that the true species is no longer known in the wild.
