description for "Apples: Malus domestica 'Yellow Delicious'"

You have to bite into a 'Yellow Delicious' to appreciate its crisp, extra-juicy flavor. Tender skin without a trace of bitterness. Normal size bigger than a man's fist. Exceptionally good in storage. For in-hand eating, sauces, pies, apple butter. If you like apples, you really should try it. The growing and fruiting habits of compspur trees differ from the habits of regular trees. Compspurs have stubby little branchlets called spurs, which produce the apple crops. The spurring growth will dwarf the tree so they tend not to be as high at maturity as other semi-dwarf trees - usually maturity height is about 10 feet. Yields an average of 6-7 bushels with some variation depending on the season. Plant 10 feet apart. Good for an espalier. Shipped at 3-1/2 to 5 feet tall. Two varieties are needed for pollination. 'Cortland' and 'McIntosh' are particularly effective pollinators. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman
