description for "Balloon Flower: Platycodon grandiflorus 'Shell Pink'"

'Shell Pink' balloon flower has very large, upward facing flowers of pale, warm pink. Perfectly suited to North American gardens, this plant is native to China and Japan. The curious flower blooms resemble small balloons that expand and silently burst open, displaying a five-pointed star about 3 inches across. They are one of the stronger-blooming summer plants. Platycodon will rebloom heavily if deadheaded. They cut well. The taller varieties may need staking. Their height can be controlled by pinching plants back by a third when they are about a foot high. This delays flowering only slightly. They are happy in most any well-drained soil. Platycodon are rather late to emerge in spring, so mark your plants well to avoid damage during early-spring soil cultivation. Easy to grow and rewarding. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman
