description for "Balloon Flower: Platycodon grandiflorus 'Misato Purple'"

'Misato Purple' balloon flower is an exciting dwarf form of this reliable plant. Perfectly suited to North American gardens, this plant is native to China and Japan and combines well with 'Moonbeam' coreopsis. The curious, purple flower blooms resemble small balloons which expand and silently burst open, displaying a five-pointed star about 3" across. They are one of the stronger-blooming summer plants. Platycodon will rebloom heavily if deadheaded. They cut well. They are happy in most any well-drained soil. Platycodon are rather late to emerge in spring, so mark your plants well to avoid damage during early-spring soil cultivation. Easy to grow and rewarding. -- edtied by dtd pbcouchman
