description for "Scented Geraniums: Pelargonium 'Citronella'"

'Citronella' scented geranium has leaves that when rubbed or brushed give off a strong odor of citronella. Although many nurseries claim this plant will repel mosquitos don't expect the insects to drop from the sky as they fly by. Instead, rub the leaves on your exposed skin while you work in the garden to keep mosquitos from bothering you. Like other scented geraniums, 'Citronella' requires a sunny spot and well drained soil. Medium green, rounded leaves; Bicolor pink/lilac flowers. Often planted with 'Citrosa' for maximum mosquito-repelling effect. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman Gardeners in northern zones should keep the tender perennials and desirable annual herbs indoors during the cold months.
