description for "Clematis: Clematis 'The President'"

'The President' clematis has large eight-sepal pink-blue flowers that are richly colored and have reddish anthers. Sepal undersides are silvery. It is a vigorous grower, flowering most of the summer. Over 100 years old. 'The President' is most likely a member of Groups 2a and 2b (Groups B1 and B2) clematis – prune only after flowering, to shape, or to remove dead wood. The Group 2 clematis flowers on wood produced the previous season AND on the current year’s growth. However, the Group 2 differs from Group 1 in that they flower both in the spring and then again either intermittently through the summer (Group 2b) or in the fall (Group 2a). To encourage additional blooms, Group 2 clematis should be deadheaded after the initial spring bloom. Provide full sun to part shade and consistent moisture. – edited by dtd pbcouchman
