description for "Corn: Zea mays subsp. mays 'Kandy Korn'"

'Kandy Korn' is an outstanding yellow hybrid sweet corn that combines tenderness and high sugar content with the unique ability to hold at prime eating stage for a week or more. The seed is normal and not a shrunken type to give better seedling vigor than some high sugar varieties. Cross pollination with other sweet corn does not affect its quality. 7 to 8 foot tall burgundy colored stalks with red and green husks. "Plant corn when the leaves on the oak trees are as big as a mouse's ear," which is after the last spring frost. In frost-free areas sow seeds when average temperatures are expected to stay between 40F degrees at night and 85F degrees during the day over a two month period. Hybrid varieties are more vigorous, produce higher yields and have greater disease resistance than standard varieties. Days to maturity: 85. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman

History:

Zea mays is native to Mexico and Guatemala, but Zea mays subsp. mays exists only in cultivation.
