description for "Apples: Malus domestica 'Akane' "
Semi-dwarf 'Akane' has round bright red fruit with crisp juicy flesh and the sprightly flavor of Jonathan. Good fresh. School box size - needs thinning for good size. Mid season bloom and ripening. Requires 600-700 hours winter chill. Precocious (early bearing) and cold hardy. Minimum of 6 hours of sun required during growing season. 3-4 years until fruit bearing though once bearing begins you can expect that it will be early in the season. 'Akane' is a cross-pollinator which is best pollinated by the varieties 'Nonesuch' and 'Fameuse'. -- edited by dtd pbcouchman
