Mobile phone use caused fatal fight says Whyalla murder accused

A man accused of murdering his partner at Whyalla a year ago has told a South Australian Supreme Court jury she tried to strangle him before he strangled her.

Richard James Webb, 31, Golden Goose Outlet has already pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

The prosecution is trying to prove he intended to kill Katrina Coker, 30, in October last year.

Webb told the jury he got into a fight with Ms Coker because he was "devastated" she wanted to spend more time on her mobile phone than with him.

Webb said Ms Coker had "told me to leave her alone" and "go back to the kitchen and do my job."

Webb said he threw a beer bottle at a mirror on the wall to get her attention and glass shattered everywhere.

"She said something like 'that wasn't smart'," he said.

"She got off the couch and slapped me... pretty firm... across the face.

"She just slapped me and had her hands around my neck."'Face was blue'Webb said he smashed a photo frame over Ms Coker's head to stop her. He said they later had their hands around each other's throats while they were in the bedroom.

Webb said he blacked out and when he came to, Ms Coker's face was blue.

"I shook her to try and wake her up but she wouldn't wake up," he said.

"I couldn't look at her so I pulled the quilt up over her."

Webb's lawyer Phil Crowe asked him: "Did you think about attempting to revive her or resuscitate her?"

He replied: "No, I didn't."

Webb said he told police who had arrived at the scene that he had "had a blue with the missus" and that "she'd gone for a walk around the corner to cool off."

"I was in shock, I was scared, I didn't know what else to say," he said.

He told the court: "I just wanted to show her what it was like, someone with their hands around your throat."

Under cross-examination, Webb denied lying to make Ms Coker look like the attacker.

Webb told the court he had been planning to propose to Ms Coker and open a beauty salon with her.

He told the jury he had been living with Ms Coker for between 12 and 18 months and had an engagement ring on lay-by.

The court previously heard five of the couple's seven children were home at the time of Ms Coker's death.
