Gardening as exercise

by Seedling

Lie down and stretch! Look at the clouds in the sky...

Kill two birds with one stone!

Gardening is a great way to get some beauty in your life in more ways than one- you can garden as well as get in shape!  The best way to do this is to maximize you time and effort while you are gardening.  Here are a couple of tips:

  • Do not sit!  Squat... I know that getting up and down can be killer on your knees, but instead of sitting on a stool next to your garden do a couple of shallow squats next to the garden every time you bend down to weed.
  • Do not bend from the waist!  You are missing a hugs opportunity here to get your thighs into great shape, as well as you gluts (butt).  Squeeze your butt while you bend your knees to weed, cut flowers etc.  This will also save your back from bending casually from the waist- a sure way to hurt yourself.
  • When lifting things in and out of cars, off tables, up from the ground make sure to engage your abs.  This is VIP!!!  If you engage your abs, not only are you getting a core workout, but again, you are saving your back from those tinges of pain you feel after gardening all day
  • MAKE SURE TO STRETCH!  This is also a big one.  Before and after you garden you have to stretch it out- you have been lifting, pulling and prodding all day long and your muscles need a little love.  Start with a downward dog stretch- hands and feet on the ground while you butt stretches in the air.  Then lie down and put one leg on the ground while you stretch the other foot up toward the sky- point and flex 5 times.  Then sit up and put your legs out in front of you.  Flex your toes and drop you head toward your knees, reaching your fingers toward your toes.
  • Just doing these couple of things will help to tighten things up a little while keeping it light and fun in your garden!

Let me know if you have any ?'s!!!
