Will I hurt my clematis if I prune it now?

Clematis in the Winter

I think I have a clematis in my yard. I haven't pruned it in the two years that I've lived here and it is a huge tangled mess now. It even has started to block my neighbors path.

Do you have any suggestions on where to start? I'm concerned that if I do it now it may hurt it or going about it wrong.

If it is a late blooming clematis this is the time to prune! So get out those shears and start pruning! If it an evergreen (which it doesn't look like it is) wait until April.

Hope this helps!

Should I just start cutting from the outside or do I try to get inside where it looks like it might be dead wood? Thanks.

I would definitely get into the interior and get rid of dead wood... It will help with good air circulation for the plant, let light reach more of the leaves, and get rid of ugly sticks that aren't producing leaves / flowers!
