Back yard slope project

We moved into a new home my husband built for us a year ago. It was a vacant lot on a coastal canyon slope. so everything had to be planned, built and planted. Its been really fun. We live in a typical Califorinia Spanish Colonial Style home. Its new construction but we tried to add the elements of the 1920's sytle Spanish home. The back yard project started with some plantings along the house and palm, large bird of paradise and citrus trees. We have 1 large bird, 5 palms, orange, 2 bar lime, tangerine and lemon trees and a bay laurel. We extended our back yard double in size with determining where our lot ended in the canyon and built a retaining wall, filled that with dirt and built a fence. We have put mulch down over the whole area. We have started the veggeie garden area and will define that space with plants to attract butterflies (we already have tons). We want to lay pavers at one end of the yard for a sitting area and in the middle of the yard put up a pegola large enough for a dinnng table underneath. So lots of plans. This is like stage A in a mulity level project.

Hi PacificStar--It sounds wonderful and like lots of fun to watch your project develop. We also moved into a new-built home, Spanish style, with a yard that had a slope with an already existing retaining wall. The builder tried to sway me to purchase a property with a completely flat parcel, but I said that if I couldn't have a slope then I wouldn't, unfortunately, want the property. There is so much that can be done with a slope. So far, we have cut into ours and had a retaining wall with patio built. There are curved concrete stairs leading up to it, and the patio helps to preserve our view(s) of the Cleveland National Forest that rests at a very short distance from our home. Everyone who sees the patio falls in love with it. We're still working on finding just the right plants for it, though; and, I/we may decide to terrace the rest of it. Like my husband says, "Some people are addicted to plastic surgery, but my wife (LilyLover) is addicted to landscaping." --Best wishes for the rest of the phases of your yard, LilyLover
