Framing Ferns and Hostas

by dig the dirt editor

Sometimes you see things in the garden that are so pretty, you wish you could put them in a picture. Well guess what? Lots of times you can! Look for plants with cool shapes or colors. Ferns have super delicate leafs called fronds. Hostas have leaves with really neat colors and patterns.

PRETTY AS A PICTURE! FRAMING FERNS AND HOSTAS

MATERIALS
• Picture frames -You'll want to buy picture frames that have two panes of glass that fit together. These can usually be found in any large discount or craft store.
• Newspaper
• Heavy books
• Fern leaves
• Hosta leaves

Step One: Cut a hosta leaf or fern leaf. Both ferns and hostas grow in shady areas of the yard. Be sure the leaf isn't too big for your frame! You can always use two small leaves instead of one big leaf.

Step Two: Place the leaves in between two sheets of newspaper. Put a stack of heavy books on top and press for 10 days.

Step Three: Remove the leaves. Put one of the leaves on the glass. Carefully place the other pane of glass on top of the leaf. Insert the glass in the frame. Framed ferns and hostas look really neat in front of a window where light can shine through them. They also make great gifts for parents, grandparents, teachers, or your favorite gardener!

What a cute project! I just love ferns and hostas- so I will definitely be trying this. I know it says Kid's Gardening Camp, but I think I want to do it myself.
