Anyone growing asparagus on MI?

by Cliff Sharples (chief cultivator)

I'm thinking about asparagus this year, but didn't know if I should start the seeds indoors or sow directly in the ground? Anyone have experience with this one?

I am waiting 25 asparagus crowns from Territorial Seed, where I've been buying seeds and plants for the last 4 years with great success. The asparagus should arrive any day now.
I've never planted it before, but have done a lot of research. I've dug up the bed to a depth of 18 inches and added lots of compost and chicken poop back in Feb. I'm starting with crowns because of the length of time involved until harvest...I can't wait that long to eat my asparagus! I'm going to put in a drip irrigation to keep up with the watering requirements. I'm very excited!
Good luck with seeds!

I did this last year with some success-- sowed the seeds directly into the ground- mostly out of laziness!
