Start eggplant seed indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost in your area. Eggplants are very tender, and are even more susceptible to cold temperatures than tomatoes.

Transplant seedlings after the soil has warmed and the danger of frost is passed. If the soil is too cold, it may inhibit growth. Plant your eggplants about a week after you plant your tomatoes.

Blights, wilts, nematodes and tobacco mosiac virus can all affect eggplants. A garden rotation every 3 to 4 years helps stamp out some wilt and nematode problems. If flea beetles are a persistent problem (you'll see minute, round holes in the leaves), you may protect plants by growing them under a row cover.
