(Update Feb 2010) Did you know you could grow tulips at home in your living room? Growing hydroponic tulips is an easy and fun way of enjoying flowers in the winter. In the next couple weeks I will show you how to grow tulips without pesticides in just plain water!

Ingredients:

Some detailed information about “hydroponic forcing” and why bulbs need a winter sleep...

Tulips need a period of cold temperatures to succeed, I call it their “winter sleep” The tulip bulb develops her flower during this winter period.  Not every variety need the same winter sleep.  Like human, some people like to sleep 6 hours, some 9hours….  Some varieties need a minimum of 12 weeks of cold period other varieties need at least 16 weeks.

I used a hydroponic forcing kit (soon online available at www.ecotulips.com) to plant the tulips. Filled the water cup with plain water. Only the bottom of the bulbs need to be in the water, never raise the water level higher then 1/3 of the bulb, otherwise the bulbs may drown...

Planting the bulbs is the most tricky part. The hydroponic growing kit contains a “pin tray” and a plastic cup.  One pin tray will fit 7 bulbs. Pierce the bulbs with the point straight up on the pins.

Use 3 pins per bulb, don’t pin in the center of the bulb.

After planting I put the tulips in the fridge. Here they will stay 8 to 14 days. (In the early season Dec-Jan the tulips need 14 to 21 days to grow enough roots) When the roots are about 1 inch tall they are ready to be placed on a sunny/light spot in your house.
