Trend Report: Glass in the Garden

by Cliff Sharples (chief cultivator)

Glass blowing is one of the Pacific Northwest’s great arts, and this season, we’re seeing lots of wonderful uses of glass in the garden. To brighten up a gray day, there is nothing quite like the pop and shine of exquisitely colored and formed glass amongst the plants.

Whimsical Fronds from Jurassic Park

So organic and so naturally set in a bed of ferns, these brightly colored fronds adds a prehistoric touch to this garden display at the Pacific Northwest Flower and Garden Show. You can imagine the giant, garishly colored foliage that might unfurl as you sleep in your bed at night!  You can find these at Glass Gardens NW!

A Rain Chain That Catches the Sun

This rain chain not only captures water, but also the rays of the sun. A creative use of glass, and a nice reprieve from the usual copper chains we are accustomed to.

A Coral Reef for Your Pool

In an exhibit called Swimming a la Naturale, a bright, sunny water feature made of glass harkens to a coral reef in The Little Mermaid!

What neat ideas! I really like the glass 'fronds' near the ferns. I have a neighbor who has a nice terra cotta pottery bowl filled pieces of iridescent glass in her cactus garden. It always catches my eye.
